Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Acupuncture?
In Oriental Medicine, disease is considered to be the consequence of imbalance in the energies of the internal organs, or a disruption of the proper flow of Qi and blood throughout the body. Acupuncture is the use of very fine needles to stimulate specific points on the body to encourage the restoration of optimal balance and harmony to the organ systems, and invigorate the circulation of Qi and blood.
2. What is Qi?
It has been scientifically proven that the human body is in fact a unique bio-energetic system. There exist chemical and electromagnetic processes continually keeping the body functioning. These processes are all together viewed as a vital life force known as "Qi", simply referred to in the west as "energy". This energy flows throughout the body along pathways known as "meridians" or "channels" which are related to and connect the organs and the myofacial-muscular system.3. Is it safe?
Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology are safe medical procedures and are well known for their efficiency and lack of side-effects when administered by a board certified practitioner. In my practice I use only pre-sterilized disposable needles for all treatments.4. What conditions do Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs treat?
For thousands of years the modalities of Chinese
medicine were used throughout Asia to treat all the health conditions of their
population. These modalities include acupuncture and herbs, along with some adjunctive therapies
like bodywork, moxabustion and cupping.
Generally I have found Oriental Medicine to be excellent
for treating most respiratory conditions, digestive disorders, gynecological
problems, any pain conditions, skin conditions, and mental/ emotional
disorders. More specifically, the World Health Organization recognizes
acupuncture to be effective treatment for the following conditions:| Allergies / Asthma | Anxiety / Depression | Arthritis / Joint problems |
| Back Pain | Bladder / Kidney problems | Colds / Flu |
| Conjunctivitis | Constipation / Diarrhea | Cough / Bronchitis |
| Dizziness | Addiction / Smoking | Fatigue |
| Frozen shoulder | Gastrointestinal Disorders | Gynecological Disorders |
| Headache / Migraine | Heart Problems | Palpitations |
| High Blood Pressure | Immune System Deficiency | Infertility |
| Knee Pain | Menopausal Discomforts | Neck Pain / Stiffness |
| Pre-Menstrual Syndrome | Paralysis / Numbness | Rhinitis / Sinus congestion |
| Sciatica | Sexual Dysfunction | Shoulder / Elbow Pain |
| Skin Problems | Stress / Tension | Tendonitis |
5. What should I expect during an office visit?
Your treatment will begin with a health assessment interview as well as a pulse and tongue diagnosis. During this time you are encouraged to sip some warm tea and get comfortable in one of our relaxing treatment rooms. During the treatment extremely fine, hair thin, flexible needles are placed at specific points on energetic pathways known as meridians. When the needles are inserted you may experience a sensation of tingling or warmth. This is chi. After the needles are inserted, it is quite common not to feel them at all. The needles will stay in for 20-30 minutes depending on your condition. Most people find their treatments extremely relaxing, and quite often patients fall asleep.6. Session cost and insurance?
The Initial Office Visit is $120.00 and lasts 90 minutes. This appointment will include an in depth look at your health history and treatment of your condition.Follow up appointments are $75.00 and last 60 minutes. They include a brief consultation and an acupuncture treatment.
Custom crafted herbal formulas are an additional $35.00.
