Treating Menstrual Disorders with Chinese Medicine

“I had suffered for years from endometriosis, despite laparoscopic surgery and birth control intervention.  Finally I found lasting relief at The Lotus Center.  My acupuncture treatments were immediately helpful in reducing the pain of my periods. Over time, they have helped regulate my cycle and now my cramping is minimal &  managed without pain meds.  Can’t thank Brodie enough for his help with this”.

A key component of Chinese Medicine is its ability to create health and well-being by balancing the cycles within the body.   A problematic menstrual cycle can be regulated and restored by both acupuncture and Chinese herbs.  Initially many of our patients find relief from their symptoms and over time experience the benefits of a healthier cycle.

For many women, the menstrual cycle can be plagued with

  • pain
  • headaches
  • cramps
  • heavy bleeding
  • irritability

Chinese Medicine views the menstrual cycle as a key component for the health of every woman.  By bringing balance to the hormones and invigorating circulation – Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can improve nearly all menstrual discomforts.

Hormones in Chinese Medicine

Modern medicine often addresses women’s health concerns by prescribing hormones.  This is frequently seen in menopausal hormone replacement therapy, many menstrual conditions, birth control, and infertility treatment.
Anything added to the body in excess of what the body can naturally produce or tolerate, can cause potential complications. This can result in unwanted side effects, such as those often seen in Hormone Replacement Therapy.  Chinese Medicine considers estrogen to be a physical expression of yin, and progesterone of yang, and recognizes that both of these substances are produced by a complex process that ultimately involves your whole body. So, to produce healthy hormones in the proper amounts that your body requires, all of the systems of your body need to be operating at an optimum level.

How does Chinese Medicine do this?

In Traditional Chinese Gynecology, treatments are often designed to work with the different phases of the menstrual cycle. By identifying which part of the cycle is out of balance, specific treatments are given at different times.  In this way, the treatment can be tailored to address the needs of each woman, helping return her body to its own natural rhythm.

If there is disruption to the balance of the organs, or stagnation in the proper circulation through the area, women can experience a wide variety of gynecological conditions.  Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs work to balance, tune, and harmonize the various individual parts, as well as the whole system so that the body will function in a more optimum state. Chinese Medicine stimulates the natural healing qualities within your body, which re-establish health and well being. It is this philosophy which makes Oriental Medicine so effective for treating gynecological conditions such as; endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, cystic ovaries or uterus, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and generally restoring the menstrual cycle to a peaceful and harmonious rhythm.

How often will I need to come?

Treatment programs vary depending on the on the nature of the condition.  We generally recommend treatment once a week for the first month or two and reduce treatments to every other week (at the middle & end of your cycle) as your condition improves.

Menopause is a natural process that every woman will go through.

Chinese Medicine has a lot to offer at this stage of life.  By bringing balance and harmony to the body, it can effectively treat the discomforts of menopause including:

  • hot flashes
  • mood swings
  • headaches
  • easily stressed

In contrast to modern western medicine, Chinese Medicine nourishes the body’s hormonal, endocrine and organ systems, so that the natural wisdom of the body can express itself.  Instead of simply trying to replace the estrogen, and keep this natural process from happening, it works to allow this transition to happen smoothly and to bring about a new balance to the hormones.
For many years, the medical community in China has been using modern methods to assist women going through menopause. Chinese Medicine, having few negative side effects, provides a safe and natural alternative.
