The Lotus Center of Ann Arbor - Acupuncture & Integrative Healthcare

Fertility Care

Fertility is one of the more complex and also one of the
most rewarding areas of our practice at The Lotus Center

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to help women become pregnant.  Not only is it a safe and effective alternative for those seeking to become pregnant naturally but also aids couples through the complete process of modern fertility technologies.  Stress is often a concern and we provide support throughout the whole process from before, during and after the pregnancy. We can coordinate your treatments and comply fully with the Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) procedures that they prescribe.

The benefits can range anywhere from reducing the side effects of medications to reducing the number of miscarriages to increasing the success rates of implantations and full term pregnancies.

“I started coming to the Lotus Center due to infertility issues. I’m delighted to report that almost exactly one year after starting acupuncture treatment here, I now have a beautiful little daughter. I firmly believe that acupuncture not only helped me to get pregnant, but also helped me to have a very smooth, comfortable, and healthy pregnancy.”

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can promote:

  • Increased blood flow to the uterus and therefore uterine wall
  • Increased endorphin production, which in turn has been shown to effect the release of GnRH
  • Lower stress hormones responsible for infertility
  • Normalization of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis
  • Decreased side effects of ART medications

For all of these reasons, acupuncture in recent years has become widely accepted as an important component of fertility enhancement and infertility treatment. In addition to acupuncture treatment and Chinese herbal medicine, lifestyle choices play an important role in restoring balance and improving the likelihood of conceiving and carrying to term a healthy child.

Not only can Oriental Medicine help couples who want to explore other options before turning to more aggressive interventions, we have also had great success optimizing the odds of Assisted Reproductive Technologies.

Though a woman can be considered fertile from the time menses begins until it ends at menopause, optimum fertility is between 21 – 25 years of age. Studies show that during this time of peak fertility, even under the best of circumstances, a healthy and fertile couple has only a 20% chance of becoming pregnant each month. This means that healthy and fertile couples cannot necessarily get pregnant as easily as they may have expected.  Many women don’t realize that their fertility starts to decline in their late 20s. By age 40, your chances of conceiving naturally (without medical help) are quite low. Recent research shows that age isn’t everything, lifestyle choices including smoke, alcohol, caffeine, and body weight all have measurable effects on your fertility.

Regardless of the challenges, practitioners at the Lotus Center are committed to giving our very best to help all couples maximize their chances of success.

Chinese Medicine treats infertility in women by harmonizing the hormonal rhythms, balancing the menstrual cycle, and energizing the circulation in the reproductive organs.

By improving a woman’s overall menstrual functioning, Chinese Medicine is effective in treating infertility whether it is due to:

  • anovulation
  • luteal phase defect
  • mid-cycle bleeding
  • habitual miscarriage

or complicated by such conditions as:

  • premature ovarian failure
  • endometriosis
  • polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • endocrine imbalance
  • immune infertility

Male Infertility

Men on are typically considered fertile from puberty throughout adulthood, yet In many infertility cases, it is the male who is responsible for the infertility.  Sperm count and motility are both very vital to fertility. There are many causes of male infertility, such as:  prostatitis, physical injury, exposure to toxic substances or drugs, varicoceles, STD’s and even stress and cigarette smoking are known to diminish sperm count and motility. In addition, sperm abnormalities can be congenital as well, however, for many men there is no apparent cause of the infertility.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can treat male infertility by improving the balance and harmony of the organs and increasing circulation.  Often this can increase testosterone, improve the production of sperm and semen, and improve the vitality of sperm.

Studies from China and Europe show that the success of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, such as In-vitro Fertilization, are improved when combined with Chinese Medicine protocols. These protocols are specifically designed to integrate with, and support, modern reproductive technologies.

At the Lotus Center, we see our work as a very good investment. When hard working couples are spending thousands of dollars on these procedures, using Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs to improve the odds  and add support through the process makes sense.
